Most Popular Foods in Atlanta, Popular Places to Eat in Georgia

MOST POPULAR FOODS /
RESTAURANTS TO EAT in ATLANTA

We're known for alot of things in Atlanta: our hospitality, our music, and of course our food. Being a native, with deep southern roots, and friends for all sides of the state I can confidently say these are the main foods we are known for and we genuinely love in Atlanta, Georgia.

Entrance to Mary Macs Team Room

Southern Cuisine - if you’re in the south you have to try our classic southern cuisine- this usually consists of chicken (baked, bbq, or fried), greens (string beans, collard greens), mash or sweet potatoes, and cornbread or biscuit. Lemonade or Ice Tea to drink.
  • Mary Macs Tea Room  — for the most authentic southern cuisine that will taste good, go here... located off Ponce de Leon (24 minute walk)
  • Empire State South — for a fancier, $$$, southern cuisine made by a famous chef and Top Chef winner, this will be your spot (7 minute walk)
  • South City Kitchen — a very popular southern restaurant, with many offerings (5 minute walk)
  • OTHERS: Wisteria, Paschal’s, JCT Kitchen & Bar, Gunshow, White Oak Kitchen, Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint, Bantam & Biddy, Miller Union. All of these are good alternates and favorites, ranging from down home to fancy.
  • Publix Grocery Store - if you want to eat in, you can go pick up a whole southern meal from their deli- don’t forget the hawaiian rolls, and publix lemonade (17 minute walk)

Chic-Fil-A - Closed Sundays, but try their chicken biscuit one morning. We have many scattered throughout the city. *You can walk to the nearest in 5 minutes, it’s located off Peachtree inside/outside Colony Square
The most famous Chicken & Waffles in the world
Chicken & Waffles - Many restaurants have their own versions, but Gladys made it famous. Gladys Knight Chicken & Waffle, she’s a famous Georgia soul singer who made the dish known by all. It’s located off Peachtree, about a 18 minute walk away
a true Atlanta landmark, when the "hot" sign is on, sometimes the line wraps around the building
Krispy Kreme Dougnuts - seriously, their signature "glaze doughnut” is hands down the most delicious doughnut in the world, especially when its hot and fresh. Located off Ponce De Leon… about a 30 minute walk I think, google it to be sure, 9 minute drive.

BBQ - we’re known for our BBQ there are a lot of places around, so yelp.com it. For something close you can try Fat Matt’s BBQ, people love them. Its right off Piedmont, about a 5 minute drive… 25 minute walk maybe.

Breakfast / Brunch - we LOVE brunch in Atlanta, its a weekend tradition. Almost every restaurant offers Sat & Sun brunch. Popular breakfast spots are Egg Harbour (off Peachtree in Buckhead, 7 minute drive, 29 minute walk), Flying Biscuit (off Piedmont, 9 minute walk), Highland Bakery (off 14th, 6 minute walk), Le Petit Marche (in Kirkwood neighborhood) - there french toast sandwich is everything, West Egg Cafe (off Howell Mill), and Homegrown.

My Personal Favorites:
I don't really have a favorite restaurant, moreso favorite dishes from various restaurants.
Here are a few of my personal favorites...

Table 1280, the restaurant of the High Museum - a hidden gem in some ways

  • Le Petit Marche (the french toast sandwich) //
  • the Boy Scout Trout dish at King+Duke //
  • the bread and butter fried pickles at TAP //
  • Dat Fire Jerk Chicken (jerk chicken is amazing, the food is fresh) //

  • the black cod, chilean sea bass, and cucumber/seaweed salad from Umi //
  • sandwiches from Neighborhood Eats //
